The Three Technologies Explained
RO (Reverse Osmosis): Forces water through a semi-permeable membrane that blocks dissolved salts, heavy metals, arsenic, fluoride and most contaminants. The gold standard for areas with high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). Removes both physical and chemical impurities but produces some reject water (20–30%).
UV (Ultraviolet): Uses UV light to kill bacteria and viruses. Highly effective at neutralising biological threats. Does NOT remove dissolved salts or heavy metals. Best for areas with low TDS but biological contamination.
UF (Ultrafiltration): Physical filter that blocks bacteria, cysts and suspended particles. Works without electricity. Cannot remove dissolved chemicals or viruses.
How to Choose Based on Your Water TDS
- TDS below 200 ppm, municipal supply: UV+UF is sufficient. Water is low in dissolved solids — you need biological protection, not salt removal.
- TDS 200–500 ppm: RO+UV+UF is recommended. Salt levels are moderate; RO removes excess minerals while UV and UF handle biological threats.
- TDS above 500 ppm (borewell, tanker water): RO+UV+UF with TDS controller is essential. High dissolved salts make the water undrinkable without RO.
